Companies

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2-Shanghai is an agency that mediates between international students and companies operating in Shanghai.

Why would your company in Shanghai recruit an internship student through 2-Shanghai when labour costs in China are so low?

We can list a number of reasons:

  • Students are particularly motivated, eager to learn and flexibly employable
  • Students have a high level of education;
  • Students can develop into permanent staff;
  • Students improve your company's image;
  • Using students shows your social involvement.

2-Shanghai's expertise will result in optimal recruitment and a successful internship!

The fact that 2-Shanghai operates in Shanghai means that a selection procedure can be set in motion quickly, partly due to short lines of communication.

Your company, socially involved

We greatly appreciate your company's involvement with the student during the internship. Besides the value added to your company, you also play an important part regarding the student's position in (local) society. An internship abroad will contribute to the student's development in many ways, which you can also benefit from, both during the internship period and possibly also after that period as an (experienced) permanent employee!

2-Shanghai, from the classroom to your table

Since 2-Shanghai works intensively with the educational institutions, we are well aware of the added value a student can make to your company. We would therefore like to contact you personally and on that basis discuss together what kind of assignment will be developed.

During the internship period 2-Shanghai acts as a helpdesk not only for the student, but for you as a company as well. This is how we facilitate the best possible collaboration, resulting in a successful internship for all parties involved

Please contact us if you are interested!

Education

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2-Shanghai attaches great importance to having a good reputation within the various educational institutions as a reliable and professional internship agency. We are also constantly in touch with these institutions so as to find a good match for the various educational requirements and keep abreast of the latest developments and needs.

2-Shanghai in the classroom

2-Shanghai visits educational institutions to present itself and to assess the possibilities available to the students. This is how expectations can be not only created, but also met!

We feel it is important that both the parents and the school support their son's/daughter's and their student's choice of country, internship location and our agency.

2-Shanghai at the workplace

2-Shanghai can also be important for the educational institutions during the internship period. This is because we do not expect that every internship supervisor will be able to 'nip' to Shanghai to visit the student during the internship period. Agreements can be made in advance with a view to interim feedback and evaluation moments so as to meet the wishes of both student and the educational institution as closely as possible.

Ultimately our aim is for all parties (the student, the company, the school and also the parents) to experience the internship in an as pleasant a way as possible.

If you are interested in an information meeting at your school, please contact us.

Facts

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Geography

Shanghai Municipality, in eastern China, encompasses 6,340 square kilometres, which includes the 748 square kilometre of Shanghai City, 8 surrounding districts and 30 islands in the Yangtze River. The two Chinese characters in the name "Shanghai" literally mean "up/above" and "sea".

Population

Shanghai is with a population of approximately 17 million people and 20 percent floating population one of the most crowded cities. However, it is a sprawling city so rarely feels overcrowded, unless, of course, you hit the main shopping streets on a Saturday or Sunday. With an average year-income of 60.000 RMB (6.000 EURO) the population of China is according to Chinese standards quite wealthy. However, the differences between the incomes are huge, not only in Shanghai but in China generally.

Language

Many languages and dialects are used in China, for example Cantonese. The written language, the characters, can be read by everyone. There are tens of thousands characters, if you know two thousand characters you are able to read the newspapers, if you are able to read six thousand characters or more you can consider yourself as an expert.

Climate

Shanghai has a land climate; cold, icy winters lasting from January until the end of April and hot, humid summers running from the end of June to September. On the plus side, the weather in late September, October, November and early December is extremely kind, with temperatures in the mid-20s and no humidity. The spring months of May and June can also be lovely. If your friends and relatives wish to come and visit you, recommend October or June as the best times.

Currency

The official currency of the People's Republic of China (PRC) is Renminbi (meaning in Chinese: "people's currency"). The People's Bank of China, the PRC's monetary authority, issues the Chinese currency. The official abbreviation of China's currency is CNY, but it is also abbreviated as "RMB". Colloquially, the Chinese currency is also called Yuan and Kuai. You can withdraw money at the Bank of China and in hotels. In the bigger cities most credit cards are accepted.

History

Shanghai was established by the 11th century, becoming China's largest textile center during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and a major trading port during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The city came into world prominence only after being forced to open to foreign trade in 1842 after her defeat during the Opium Wars.

In a series of separate treaties, the British, Americans and French each carved out separate Concessions, with the British and the Americans consolidating to form the International Settlement in 1862. Shanghai became legendary for its glamour and its vice; it was Asia's largest, most cosmopolitan city.

The Communist Party of China was founded in Shanghai in 1921, but that didn't prevent Chiang-kai shek's Nationalist army from capturing Shanghai in 1927. The Japanese attacked the city during the 1930s, occupying the city for the duration of World War II. Shanghai was returned to China at the end of World War II, by which time Britain, the U.S. and France had renounced their claims to their Concession.

In May 1949, the Communists claimed the city; in October that year, they won national victory. During the Cultural Revolution, Shanghai was the base of the Gang of Four, but in 1990 when paramount leader Deng Xiao Ping declared that the city should open up and participate in the economic reforms, the city happily returned to her capitalist roots. Since then, Shanghai has grown into China's powerhouse, an unstoppable economic, social and cultural juggernaut.

Design furniture

Background

This company is active in developing, producing and selling in office furniture from famous international designers. They operate in the middle and high end niche of the office furniture market and their products have a high quality and design level. They cooperates with dealers in Scandinavia, Germany, United Kingdom, Russia, United States, Australia and Qatar. Since six years they have a production facility in the Netherlands and in Taicang. Their production facility in China is growing fast, because they transferring more of their production to China.

Assignment

Monthly reporting

Every month the preceding months performance should be communicated to the management and the head office in the Netherlands. The past reporting structure was limited and was not suitable to convey useful management information. To end this, a new reporting structure has been developed. In addition to this standard report they like to set up additional ratio performance indicators which provide good and easy to access management information. The idea is that focusing on key financial ratios allows for an easy and quick performance evaluation. To allow us to benchmark these figures with past performance, it is essential to also extract similar data from the ERP system retrospectively over 2009. Additionally this information should allow us to construct a package of key financial multipliers that can be used by our sales team in the field. To elaborate: If our sales personnel is required to provide on the spot quotations to customers they can use these multipliers to come to a fairly accurate estimate. This can partly improve the effectiveness of our sales personnel.

Monthly deliverables

  • Financial statement
  • Balance sheet
  • Income statement

Analysis overview

  • Feedback and elaboration on monthly figures in the form of an executive summary
  • Comparative analysis: What has changed compared to the preceding months?
  • Budget forecasts/adjustments1
  • Sales forecasts updates

Weekly and semi-weekly deliverables

  • bank balance overview
  • Liquidity forecasts based on the accounts receivable, order book and projected future sales
  • Semi weekly (even weeks) financial update letter for management (steel price current/forecast, exchange rate current/forecast, month forecast, inventory alerts warnings, etc.)

Foreign exchange and bank negotiations

The Euro/CNY exchange rate is very volatile. Since this company is a exporting company with most of its revenue in EURO and most of its costs in RMB this poses a serious FX risk to the company. In the past this risk has been ignored, because of time constraints. Additionally the FX rate volatility went both ways, thereby evening out the losses and gains over the FX rate in the long run. However, 2010 FX forecast are negative; and pressured by the crisis in Greece and other Euro countries has already suffered a severe FX rate loss in the first two months of 2010.

To this end this, the management is seeking to set up a FX hedging system. Negotiations with several Chinese and international banks were conducted to evaluate the options. Unfortunately Chinas financial climate is not fully developed yet and several common Western approaches to this problem had to be ruled out. The remaining options are more time consuming and require a significant administrative effort. It is essential that this system it set up with great care, since any error can inflict great losses. Besides hedging the exchange risk on running orders, quotations for new orders should also receive the necessary price adjustments in relation with the exchange rate fluctuations. For the latter it is imperative to set up clear communication towards their customers outlining our newly developed policies on this matter. Additionally they should be able to provide them with clear financial calculation motivating possible price adjustments.

Requirements

  • Analytical skills and must be able to anticipate on situations/problems

  • Flexible and open-minded attitude
  • Must be detailed-oriented and well-organized

Testimonials

Bret opleiding: Technische Bedrijfskunde

(Soon to be translated!)

Mijn tijd in Shanghai is geweldig geweest.

Tom - opleiding: Technische Bedrijfskunde

Dolon - opleiding: Commerciele economie / Sportmarketing
